Über den Autor John Steinbeck

John Steinbeck (27.2.1902 Salinas, Kalifornien - 20.12.1968 New York), Literat, Journalist und Kriegsberichterstatter, gehört zu den erfolgreichsten amerikanischen Schriftstellern des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er verfasste 33 literarische Werke, darunter 16 Novellen, sechs Sachbücher und zwei Kurzgeschichtensammlungen. Er ist wesentlich inspiriert von den ärmlichen Verhältnissen seiner Heimat Salinas in Kalifornien. Die Protagonisten seiner Novellen wie »Tortilla Flat«, »Cannery Row« (dt. »Die Straßen der Ölsardinen«) oder »Of Mice and Men« (dt. »Von Mäusen und Menschen«) sowie seines Romanepos »East of Eden« (dt. »Jenseits von Eden«) sind mit gesellschaftlichen und seelischen Abgründen konfrontiert. Für seinen Roman »The Grapes of Wrath« (dt. »Früchte des Zorns«) erhält er 1940 den Pulitzer-Preis. 1962 folgt der Literaturnobelpreis für sein Gesamtwerk. Neben seinem Eintreten für soziale Gerechtigkeit trat er schon früh für einen bewussten Umgang mit der Natur ein. Er kann deshalb als ein Vorreiter der Umwelt-Bewegung angesehen werden.
